I 'am Too Old To Learn Martial  Arts

January 22, 2006

I am too old to learn martial arts. If I had a dime for
every time one of my students said that. The fact is the
older you are the better martial arts can be if taught
correctly. Most of my students are in their 30s, 40s and
beyond. If you join a school for children and train with
children, you are right, you are too old. The nice thing
about how the Academy of Kempo Martial Arts in Bellevue,
Lynnwood and Kent run their programs is that an adult means
18+ not 12 and up like many schools. Training with your
family is great, if that is what you are looking for.
However, if you think your age is holding you back from
starting something new like martial arts then I am here to
tell you it should not. In fact, if you have any
apprehension, contact me at our Bellevue Academy of Martial
Arts and I will put you in contact with someone, your age,
who is having the time of their life training.

The great thing about teaching adults is they know exactly
what they want from their training. What we have heard from
most people is they do not want to do tournaments and get
hurt. Sounds reasonable, either do I. Also, they do not
want some young kid teaching them and no one wants the
frustration of being put into large groups without knowing
what they are doing. That is why we have private one on one
lessons.

The fact is that martial arts done right can benefit
everyone. Look at the people in China. Practicing Tai Chi
is a common way of dealing with stress. If you want to find
out who you are, and what makes you tick, I think there is
no way more challenging than training martial arts.

However, I do realize that our school is not right for
everyone. That is why we require a two week evaluation to
determine if this is something you really want to do. We
have found this to be a safe and non-committed way for the
school, and the student, to take the first step. If you are
interested please give us a call at one of our locations
and mention the free two week trail that you read about on
the web. Good luck and I hope to see you training soon.
